Construction update

Excavation behind the Branford P. Millar Library is well under way. The hole is now close to 30 feet deep, with slide-rail shoring holding back the sides as digging continues. As the 29 ton rails are driven further into the ground, vibration and occasional shaking can be felt throughout the Library. Other than significant noise in classroom 160, Library operations have not been disrupted. We apologize for the noise produced during this phase of the project. Fortis Construction has been keeping the Library well informed as work progresses.

The excavation is part of the Campus Loop Project that will result in considerable energy and maintenance savings by consolidating heating and cooling functions on campus. For more on the project and how it helps make the Portland State campus more sustainable, see the article in today's Vanguard.

Social Networking for Physical Scientists

American Institute of Physics Announces Social Networking for Researchers*

AIP UniPHY is social networking platform for physical scientists that is pre-populated with profiles of individual researchers based on their publication history. Users will find their colleagues’ research and will be able to follow a web of connections that shows each researcher involved in the project and their past collaborators.
Profiles include information such as the number of articles a person published in a given year, what specific fields these papers were in, and the number of co-author connections each has. If you are a researcher who has published at least two papers that are indexed in AIP’s SPIN database you will have a pre-populated profile which you can validate after registering at the site.
For more information or to validate or set up your profile, go to: http://www.aipuniphy.org/Portal/Portal.aspx

Library presents the documentary, Welcome to Iran

Portland State Library presents the documentary, Welcome to Iran

Welcome to Iran
5th Avenue Cinema
SW 5th & SW Hall
Portland, OR

7:00 PM Friday, October 16, 2009

The Portland State Library presents a video project, Welcome to Iran, as part of of the September Project 2009 at the 5th Avenue Cinema, Friday, October 16, at 7 pm. A chat with filmmaker, Art Wright, will follow the screening.

Welcome to Iran is a video project by Art Wright, which explores Persian history by visiting sites both ancient and contemporary. It was taken during a trip with a group made up mostly of Oregonians to Iran in November 2008. Not quite a travelogue, not a slide show,it mixes digital stills and moving images in an attempt to explain the attitude of today's Iran. While not overtly political, (in fact discussions of contemporary issues were discouraged while in Iran), it nevertheless touches on issues now made relevant by the recent events in Iran.

For more information, please call 503.725.4552.

Free admission and open to the public.

Annual Matching Grant for Canadian Studies Material Continues

The Portland State Library has been receiving a matching grant award, the "Canadian Studies Library Support Grant," from the Consulate General of Canada since 1995. This annual grant award of $2,000 or more allows us to strengthen our Canadian Studies holdings in order to support teaching and research in Canadian Studies, including topics in social sciences and the humanities, such as business studies, economics, law, education, communications policy, environmental studies, architecture, and other related fields. We appreciate the generosity of the International Council for Canadian Studies in offering this matching grant opportunity, as it has alllowed us to develop substantial holdings of Canadiana materials over the years. (To find Candiana materials, search our Library Catalog-Vikat at: http://vikat.pdx.edu/.)

New Family Study Room in the Library!

The Portland State University Library has opened a small Family Study Room, designed for student-parents and their children. Student-parents often find themselves on campus with their kids, and need family friendly spaces. The room is the result of the Library's collaboration with the Helen Gordon Child Development Center, and with the support of the Office of Information Technologies.

The Family Study Room has two workstations for students and a play/reading area for children. It can accommodate two family groups at a time, and is available on a first-come, first-served basis by checking out a key at the Circulation Desk on the first floor of the Library. The room does not provide childcare, but offers a family-friendly place for student-parents to study and work on projects.
