New Library Survey

You are invited to participate in a survey of library service quality at Portland State University. This 10-minute survey, known as LibQUAL+, assesses satisfaction with collections, services, access and space. The results will help us to more effectively serve you. Please rate the quality of resources and service you expect and receive at the Portland State Library. It is the difference between your expectations and the service you recieve which tells us where we need to improve.

To thank you for participating, the Library is offering several prizes, the winners to be randomly selected from participants completing the survey. You can enter the drawing by entering your e-mail address at the end of survey.

  • Grand Prize - 8GB iPod nano with video capability
  • 1 - Gas gift card worth $130 OR 30 Tri-met all-day passes
  • 2 - $50 Portland State Bookstore gift certificates
  • 7 - $10 Starbucks gift certificates

Thank you in advance for your participation! For more information and to start the survey, go to: http://library.pdx.edu/libqual.html

Learning about library resources now will help you work more efficiently and effectively later in the term. We offer a variety of drop-in sessions and workshops about how to use the library and its resources. These workshops cover research strategy, searching techniques, the use of specific tools and resources such as RefWorks and PsychInfo, and much more. These sessions are open to all members of the Portland State campus community and the public. Advance registration is not required. For more details, see our workshop calendar, where a full schedule of workshops starts in October 2008. If you have questions, call the Reference Desk (503) 725-5874.

Dark Horse Comics Archives Featured in Portland Monthly

Portland State University Library's Dark Horse Comics archive received a full-page feature in the October issue of Portland Monthly. ILLiad Interlibrary Loan System - New Login Method

On Tuesday, September 23, 2008, the Library will be implementing a change to the ILLiad Interlibrary Loan System, the system used for requesting materials held by other libraries. On this date, after we complete the change, all current PSU students, faculty, and staff will be able to access the ILLiad system using their last names and unique PSU ID numbers. This is the same login information you would currently use to renew your loans in the Library Catalog. We're making this change to reduce the numbers of different login accounts that you need to use the Library's systems, and to help us plan for future improvements.

If you already have an ILLiad account now, your existing login name and password will still work to access the system, but this type of older login will be phased out after the Fall 2008 term.

Please note that the ILLiad system will be unavailable on Tuesday, September 23, 2008, from 11:00am to 5:00pm while we implement this change.

Gordon Hunter endowment for library special collections

The late A. Gordon Hunter (1937-2006), an active Portland State University alumnus, former president of the Friends of the Branford P. Millar Library, and a well-respected used bookseller in Portland, bequeathed his entire estate to create an endowment for the purchase of titles for the Portland State Library’s Special Collections. His estate included a vast and encyclopedic book collection and many important books were added to the Library’s collection. Gordon loved books on the history of the Pacific Northwest as well as contemporary literature and films. He was one of the first independent booksellers to use the Internet successfully to sustain his thriving book business.

Gordon grew up in Portland and received his Bachelor of Arts in History from Portland State University in 1959. He held a Master of Arts in Political Science from the University of Utah and taught high school civics and history in Oregon and Alaska. As a civic activist, Gordon supported not only Portland State, but also was a member of the Cully association of Neighborhoods, the Portland Boundary Commission, the Metro Policy Advisory Committee, and was the founder and president of the Metro Community Development Corporation, a non-profit agency that provides affordable housing.
